Born a hundred metres from the Birgu waterfront, Matt grew up rowing in Dockyard Creek and losing badly at bocci to men four times his age. He worked the Grand Harbour as a heritage guide for a decade and still thinks Valletta looks best from the other side of the water, ideally at 6:45 in the morning, before the first tour flag appears.

Elena swims before work from the rocks at Fond Għadir, year round, and judges every restaurant first by its bread. She has spent years mapping which south-coast rock pool is calm in which wind, knowledge she considers more useful than most degrees. Her tours are the ones with salt in them.

Maya is Gozitan, which she will mention within the first minute of meeting you. She crosses to Malta only when strictly necessary. She knows which Dwejra pool holds the light in October, when the Ta' Pinu bells actually ring, and where Ramla's sand gets its colour. Her Gozo is slower than yours. Deliberately.
